Center Hours for our Guests
Emergency Assistance: Appointments Only 9:00–3:30 M – F
Food Assistance: Tuesday and Thursday 9:00–11:30
The Center provides a caring Christian presence to the people in the Benton Harbor area. Its community outreach services provide information, personal support and assistance with utilities, food, medicines, limited transportation and other basic needs. (We write MEAP grants for heat & electric help yearly.)
The Center also provides a rainbow of educational/social opportunities for its guests: one-on-one computer education; Grief Group in partnership with Lori’s Place; GED tutoring; financial literacy classes; health monitoring; creative, healthy food recipes; luncheons for grandmothers; conversations on valuing and choosing for life changes; and a variety of speakers on issues facing the BH community.
The Center has a small Thrift Store accepting gently used sheet sets, blankets, bathroom towels/face cloths and, for the kitchen, we accept dishes, pots/pans, silverware and dish towels.
**In the winter months, sweaters, coats, gloves, and hats are always appreciated.
Thrift Store Hours of operation: M – Th. 9:00 – 11:30.
(Drop off goods anytime M-F, but please call first for afternoon drops in case I need to leave the building!)
Please continue to pray for us as we strive to be faithful stewards and extensions of your care in the Mission of Jesus to those we serve in Benton Harbor. God bless us all!
This ministry serves those who are incarcerated in Berrien County Jail. Volunteers are there to assure them that they are not forgotten by the Catholic Church. Prayer services and ministering are done once a week. A training session is held with Sr. Rita Schafer (now retired from working at the Catholic Community Center) prior to entering this ministry. Ministers also participate in the training session of the Forgotten Man Ministries which supplies chaplains to many jails. Each person is photographed and fingerprinted for identification purposes for admittance to the jail. Those interested in this ministry can reach Sr. Rita via the Parish Office at (269) 925-2425 .
SS. John & Bernard Parish provides volunteers for the Soup Kitchen on the 1st Friday of every month and the 4th Monday of every other month. Call Terri Wallis at (269) 463-5774 for more information or you can call the Soup Kitchen at (269) 925-5457 , located at 233 Michigan St., Benton Harbor, to see what other opportunities there are for you to help.
Habitat for Humanity
